Setting
To imagine a fantastic world, the first thing you have to choose is the setting. There is a tendency to believe that all fantasy stories must have medieval knights and castles, dragons, elves, and dwarves. But there are lots of types of worlds in movies, novels, TV series, and video games. These are examples of different stories you can choose to start creating your world. Feel free to combine them and add your personal ideas. Imagination knows no limits!
- Science-fiction. Interstellar flights, futuristic cities, time-travelling, robots, aliens, dinosaurs... Cool stuff!
- Alternate reality. What if our world were a little different? What if there were magic, demons, robots, or anything you could imagine?
- Space Western. Spaceships, desert planets, and cowboys!
- Post-apocalyptical stories. Civilization has collapsed. Now the streets are empty and only a few humans have survived.
- Ancient fantasy. It's easy. Instead of dragons, medieval knights, and castles, try to imagine an ancient world ruled by angry gods and full of mysteries, gigantic pyramids and marble columns.
- Totally crazy stuff. Combine anything that comes to your mind to create the weirdest world possible.
- Fantasy overload! A galactic empire full of planets where civilization has collapsed due to a space-time crisis that have brought dinosaurs back to life. People are now ruled by tyranic overlords that live in castles and ride mechanical dragons. Most technological advances have been forgotten and people have started to worship the ancient gods and practice magic again. And there's more: a malignant race of aliens have reached the empire and threatens to open the gates of the Underworld and release the hordes of demons trapped inside.
Short example
The land of Kishar is an ancient world, orbiting a yellow sun within Orion's belt. Diverse civilizations dominate most of its lands, although there are many savage and barbarian tribes as well. In the land of Kishar, people are generally ruled by kings who live in marble and mammoth ivory palaces and are assisted by their court wizards and the priests of the seven gods. They fight by sword and shield, and their weapons and armors are made of bronze and the mythical orichalcum, extracted from the sunken lands of the Southern moors. Technology is at a primitive state, since Kisharians still make use of magic and sacred rituals to forge their weapons and build their houses and temples. Although there are lots of regional variations, most of Kishar's surface has a desert climate, while a few lands to the west and the islands in the Great Sea have tropical climate. It is this general desert climate what has made Kisharians explore different small planets through magical stargates opened by their priests. Because of this, the land of Kishar has plenty of colonies in smaller worlds, from where they take the resources they need.
Format
Now that you have chosen the setting of your world, you need to choose were to start to build it. You can print your writings out and create some sort of book or printed encyclopedia or keep them online and create a blog or a wiki. In any case, make sure you keep a safe copy of your work.
